KI Achieves FISP (S) Certification, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and circular practices
KI has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to sustainability by achieving the enhanced FISP (S) certification, building on over a decade of continuous accreditation under the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP). As the only independently certified sustainability standard created specifically for the furniture sector, FISP represents the industry’s most comprehensive benchmark for environmental, social and economic best practice. KI first became FISP-certified in 2013. Its progression to the advanced FISP (S) standard in late 2025 demonstrates the company’s ambition to lead the industry toward more circular, transparent and future?ready product development.
FISP certification requires organisations to embed the three pillars of sustainability: environment, society and economy, throughout their operations. To retain certification, KI undergoes an annual external audit that drives continuous improvement and maintains accountability across the business, extending beyond environmental impact alone. The comprehensive range of organisational practices reviewed include legal compliance, environmental policy, sustainable purchasing, community engagement, workforce development, energy efficiency, waste reduction and responsible end?of?life management.
In response to evolving industry expectations and the launch of SKA Rating Office Environmental 2.0 in 2025, FISP introduced an optional additional module: FISP (S). This enhanced certification places greater emphasis on product-specific sustainability and the development of the circular economy, with a focus on eco-design and end-of-life strategies.
To achieve FISP (S) certification, members must demonstrate a clear route for offering remanufactured or second-life products and have Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for selected products. This evolution supports a more circular approach within the furniture industry, highlighting KI’s commitment to sustainable innovation.
Jeremy McWhinney, Operations & Finance Director, MSc Business Strategy and the Environment commented “At KI Europe we proudly champion our FISP membership because we believe it plays a critical role in shaping a more responsible and sustainable furniture industry. FISP’s industry-specific framework not only empowers and guides us to make meaningful, continuous improvements across all pillars of sustainability, but also provides a valuable and much-needed benchmark for the sector.
“In 2025, we were among the first to achieve certification to the new FISP (S) criteria, which strengthens the link between sustainability and circularity by introducing product-focused requirements. Being an early adopter of FISP (S) reflects our commitment to leading the way in eco-design and end-of-life strategies, ensuring KI remains at the forefront of positive change in our industry.”
