State-of-the-art European weather centre headquarters in Reading given go-ahead

The UK Government has been granted planning permission to develop a new cutting-edge headquarters for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) at the University of Reading. Construction of ECMWF’s modern, accessible, and highly sustainable headquarters is scheduled to start towards the end of this year and completion is expected in Autumn 2026, after Wokingham Borough Council approved the development at its February 2024 Planning Committee. This new showroom boasts Andreu World’s international presence along with the company’s dedication to nature, creativity, sustainability and wellbeing, with new and established collections presented throughout. The showroom will feature collections including collaborations with renowned international designers such as Patricia Uquiola (pictued), Philippe Starck, and Benjamin Hubert. The collections include: Bolete BIO, Nuez BIO, Oru, Mariya, Forest, Alla, Calma and more.

More than a million women mask period sick days each year because they feel unable to tell their boss the true reason for their absenceMore than a million women mask period sick days each year because they feel unable to tell their boss the true reason for their absence. The latest research revealed in the Bupa Wellbeing Index, shows that one in eight (13 percent) women have taken time off work in the last 12 months due to symptoms linked to periods, with a third (35 percent) gave a different reason when requesting the time away. Seven in ten employees (67 percent full time and 69 percent part time) say that they feel the need to put a brave face on things when asked about their mental health. Half (47 percent full time and 54 percent part time) report that the reason is because bigger things are going on in the world right now and they don’t wish to be a burden, whilst a quarter of full time employees (27 percent) and a third of part time employees (35 percent) don’t believe that people really want to know how they are. A quarter (26 percent full time and 27 percent part time) say they fear being judged if they open up. As a result they are feeling withdrawn, isolated and less able to socialise. (more…)

significant opportunities are being missed by office investors, owners, and occupiers who do not have clear strategies to retrofit offices in placeThe UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has launched new guidance on retrofitting large office buildings. Setting out the most cost- and carbon-effective retrofit measures in the immediate and longer term, the guidance reframes retrofit as an iterative process rather than a standalone project. UKGBC has found that significant opportunities are being missed by office investors, owners, and occupiers who do not have clear strategies to retrofit offices in place. Firstly, through missing the “easy wins” –low cost, low disruption measures that reduce energy consumption – and secondly, through missing key “trigger points” in lease and maintenance cycles that facilitate easier, more efficient retrofit.
