UK workers put in £24 billion worth of unpaid overtime during the pandemic

UK employers claimed £24 billion of free labour last year because of workers doing unpaid overtime, according to new analysis published by the TUC. More than three million people did unpaid overtime in 2020, putting in an average of 7.7 unpaid hours a week. On average, that’s equivalent to £7,300 a year of wages going unpaid for work done. According to the study, undertaken by Amanda Shantz, Associate Professor and MBA Director at Trinity Business School, finding your work meaningful increases the likelihood of receiving a better performance review because it improves your ‘promotive voice behaviour’. Half of employees think managers have become less empathetic in latest lockdown

Gig economy workers to make up fifth of employees in financial services firms, claims report

More than half of financial institutions say they expect to have more ‘gig economy’ based employees over the next three to five years, according to PwC’s report, Productivity 2021 and beyond: Upskilling the workforce of the future to create a competitive advantage in financial services. CBRE acquires 35 percent stake in flexible office provider Industrious

CBRE Group has announced the acquisition of a 35 percent interest in Industrious, a provider of flexible office space, which will also see CBRE’s existing flexible workplace firm Hana absorbed into Industrious. CBRE is now Industrious’ largest shareholder. In addition, CBRE is expected to acquire an additional 5 percent of Industrious in the coming weeks, which would result in a 40 percent total stake. The investment significantly increases CBRE’s participation in the flexible workplace sector and positions the company to meet rising demand from occupiers for agile space solutions — a trend that is being accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
